Frequently Asked Questions About Moissanite
Order
Moissanite is a sparkling gemstone that closely resembles a diamond. It was first discovered in 1893 by French chemist, Henri Moissan, while examining rock samples. It is made up of silicon carbide and while it does occur in nature, it is scarce and has only been found in upper mantle rock and meteorites. So, now it is made in labs.
Moissanite boasts better brilliance (or sparkle) compared to diamonds due to its higher refractive index. It’s also durable – diamonds score a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, but moissanite isn’t far behind with a score of 9.25. This means that moissanites are also extremely resistant to scratching and chipping.
When it comes to price, moissanites are a more affordable alternative to diamonds without compromising on quality and sparkle.
Jewelry experts often need a "moissanite tester" to measure electrical conductivity to see the difference between diamonds and moissanites.
Moissanite, while it is a diamond alternative, is not a synthetic diamond or a cubic zirconia.
Moissanite is a unique gemstone in its own right, composed of silicon carbide. It was originally discovered in a meteor crater, making it a naturally occurring mineral. Today, moissanite used in jewelry is lab-grown to ensure consistency in quality and availability.
When it comes to durability and brilliance, moissanite comes out on top.
Moissanite has a hardness of 9.5 on the Mohs scale, while the hardness of cubic zirconia only comes in at 8 to 8.5. This makes cubic zirconia less durable.
While also a good choice for sparkle, cubic zirconia does not deliver the same amount of brilliance as moissanite. Moissanite has more fire, which gives its sparkle a more brilliant, white appearance.
As it is incredibly rare to find moissanite naturally, most moissanite jewelry is made with lab-created gems.
